Weight Loss Injections: What is Tirzepatide?
The brand name for Tirzepatide is Mounjaro and it is an injectable medication that is administered weekly. It acts on two different receptors, GLP-1 and GIP, which stimulate hormones that control blood sugar levels and reduce appetite. It also slows the emptying of your stomach and therefore curbs your appetite resulting in weight loss.
What Side Effects Should I Expect?
The most reported side effects of these medications is nausea and vomiting. You may also have constipation and upper abdominal pain. Those with family or personal history of medullary thyroid cancer, multiple endocrine neoplasia, pancreatitis, or advanced heart failure should not use this medication.
What Should I Expect at my First Appointment?
The first appointment we will discuss the pros and cons of using this medication. If you decide to proceed with weekly injections I will then order the medication. It can take up to 2 weeks to obtain the medication from the pharmacy. Once we have the medication you can either pick up the entire vial with the insulin syringes needed for administration, or you can ask that we draw up the medication for administration in our office or at home.
